I think that being a driver and a biclyst, like nowadays many Dutch and Danes are, also has a big impact. It's not cars versus bikes anymore like it was in the 70's and 80's in these countries, it's having the option to shift travel modes, being able to understand "the other side" and the willigness to share the avaible space.
